Petersburg has been running low on good news in recent times as it weathers a financial crisis. First Baptist Church, Petersburg is trying to be a beacon of hope for the city — and to keep from fading into history. Though it once considered moving or merging as its congregation dwindled, the church that will celebrate its 200th anniversary next year has embarked on an ambitious $500,000 capital campaign to repair its expansive facility and to put itself in a position to be even more of a positive force in the city. In the wake of the closing of the area’s only homeless shelter, and amid a record-breaking spell of cold weather, the entire Tri-Cities community has pitched in to set up a temporary shelter at First Baptist Church on West Washington Street in Petersburg.
